About IMPACT

IMPACT is a conference designed for high school students that focuses on the theme of anti-poverty. This full-day seminar took place on Friday March, 6, 2009 at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (Richmond Campus; 8771 Lansdowne Road).

At this conference, students learned about poverty in Richmond and internationally and how they can, as youths, help end poverty and make an IMPACT in their community. Students also travelled to the Richmond Terra Nova Rural Park where they were given a tour of the farm; they also helped with gardening in the greenhouse, maintenance work. Transportation was also provided to the farm and back to Kwantlen.

Itinerary

8:15 – 8:45 a.m. Registration (Kwantlen)
8:45 – 10:00 a.m. Opening Ceremony and Guest Speaker #1 (Kwantlen)
10:00 a.m. Leave Kwantlen and go to Terra Nova Rural Park
12:30 p.m. Return to Kwantlen
1:00 – 1:30 p.m. Lunch (Kwantlen)
1:30 – 3:00 p.m. Guest Speaker #2 and Closing (Kwantlen)
3:00 p.m. Pick up student (at Kwantlen)

The cost of the conference is $5 (cash or cheque) and this covers all expenses for the conference. Please make cheques payable to Rotaract Club of Richmond.

Registration Deadline was Wed. Feb. 25, 09 – so get your forms and money in as soon as possible.

Arzeena Hamir from Richmond Fruit Tree Sharing Project

Arzeena Hamir is the Food Security Coordinator with the Richmond Food Security Society. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture from the University of Guelph and her Master’s Degree from the University of London, England. Arzeena has worked on food security projects internationally as a CUSO volunteer in Thailand and as a CIDA-sponsored researcher in Gujarat, India. Since 1997, she has been both working and volunteering with a variety of non-profit groups including Farm Folk City Folk, the Richmond Fruit Tree Sharing Project, and the Richmond Food Bank. She currently coordinates a number of projects including the Richmond Pocket Market, the Richmond Local Food Guide, and the formation of the new Richmond Farm School. She lives in Richmond with her husband and 2 children.
